Unilator Tank Refurbishment

A Case Study in Effective Industrial Coatings Work

Existing Challenge

Here’s a look at a comprehensive refurbishment of a tank facing metal loss due to prolonged exposure and corrosion of the underlying steel. Beyond the aesthetic concerns, the potential for severe corrosion and metal deterioration posed significant risks, including failures that could result in safety and environmental challenges.

To safeguard our customer’s assets and avert future issues, we implemented a three-step process:

Approach and Solution

Step 1: Abrasive Blasting per SSPC-SP 6

Our initial phase involved abrasive blasting in accordance with SSPC-SP 6 standards to eliminate pre-existing coatings. This crucial step ensured a clean slate for the subsequent protective measures.

Step 2: Applying 1 Coat of Epoxy

Following the abrasive blasting, we applied a specialized epoxy coating to serve as a primer and barrier, creating a protective shield against corrosive elements.

Step 3: Applying 1 Coat of Polyurethane

To fortify the tank’s defenses further, we applied a coat of polyurethane, providing enhanced protection, vibrant color, and gloss retention. This contributes to the longevity of the structure.

Results and Benefits

As a result of these steps, we anticipate an extended service life of 12-15 years in a mild environmental setting. Our commitment to quality and comprehensive industrial services extends beyond tank refurbishment, encompassing abrasive blasting, painting, polyurea, and other plural components, as well as spray foam insulation.

With our state-of-the-art equipment, including a vapor blaster, power washing tools, two plural component Graco reactors, two mobile air compressors, blast pots, four trucks, and three trailers, our team is well-equipped to meet diverse industrial needs.
